Light Years Apart is an interactive science fiction investigating varying processes of ‘looking’ and ‘engagement’ within cinematic spectatorship.
In “Engagement Mode” this film utilizes biometric data and computer vision technology to posit two distinct trajectories within a branching narrative structure.
Within this framework, high engagement and retention provide access to varying degrees of the protagonist’s inner life and subjectivity. Low engagement and retention provide access to the bleak exterior of the protagonist’s inner life.
You can browse this website and watch this film without providing biometric information in “Manual Mode.”
In “Manual Mode,” you can use your trackpad or mouse to navigate the film’s trajectory.
You can opt out of “Engagement Mode” and switch to “Manual Mode” at any time during screening.
In beta mode, this application examines the spectator's facial landmarks, spatial position, and movement to (1) measure user engagement and (2) control the film's trajectory. The official launch will include eye-tracking and iris-detection capabilities to optimize the film's screening experience and custom calibrations to accommodate a neurodiverse audience.
Before screening this film, your web browser will request permission to use your webcam.
Our algorithm utilizes your webcam and Google’s MediaPipe BlazeFace model, an application programming interface (API), to identify spectator facial landmarks, spatial position, and movement.
Our application does not store biometric information.
Google's MediaPipe Solutions Preview API is an on-device machine learning API and is subject to Google API terms of service and Google API user data policy as specified in Google's developer terms. It provides libraries and tools to employ machine learning techniques in our application efficiently. There is no server involvement in the machine-learning process for applications like facial recognition and landmark analysis.
Surveillance and identity recognition are explicitly out-of-scope applications of Google’s Mediapipe BlazeFace API and thus not enabled (Bazarevsky, Google 2).
Biometrics and digital information (including but not limited to browser type and settings, device type and settings, operating system, mobile network information including carrier name and phone number, and application version number) collected by Google are subject to Google's Privacy Policy.
This agreement outlines the terms and conditions of this website.
